Introducing
Ancram Center for the Arts
Serving the Hudson Valley, the Berkshires and Litchfield county, Ancram Center for the Arts brings innovative contemporary performances and vital community programs to the region. It comprises two buildings, the historic Ancram Opera House, an intimate performance hall, and a recently acquired neighboring house that dates to 1780. This property will become the Annex and it, along with the Opera House, will be a hub for creativity and engagement as part of a thriving new organization with a new name, Ancram Center for the Arts.
Progress Report as of November 2024
We're excited to share the latest progress on our theater renovation project. Here's what's been happening:
Accessibility Improvements
To make the Opera House a more accessible venue, we have converted what was office space located right off the lobby into an accessible restroom. Next up is construction of permanent ramping to the theater’s front porch and entrance.
ADDITIONAL STORAGE AND LOBBY EXPANSION
The new bathroom design has not only improved accessibility but also allowed us to expand the small theater lobby by just a bit. While still modest in size, the renovation provides more space for you to gather before or after shows, as well as some much-needed storage for our operations.
ANNEX CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
If you’ve driven by the Opera House, you may have noticed activity at the house next door, which we acquired to expand and support its programs. At the site, we have completed interior demolition and major repairs to the septic system.
The new building will be called The Annex. It will feature a 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom artist/intern house to provide accommodations for those working at the theater, as well as a community room for our many free classes and community programs. In particular, it will be used to support annual storytelling workshops with the 4th, 5th and 6th graders at Taconic Hills Elementary. And as much as this new space will serve current activities, it will allow Ancram Center to expand its educational programs in the future. We also plan to offer the Annex to other Ancram groups needing space for meetings and small gatherings.
